TNR: Fombrauge 2010?

by Ryan M » Thu Oct 15, 2015 9:37 pm

Hey folks. Anybody tasted this? What I expect to be my new preferred wine shop in Kansas City has it and the staff (who seem to share my tastes) were enthusiastic. But then I read some of the notes posted here for other vintages and I worry whether this is some kind of modern soulless monster.

That said . . . . I have increasing evidence to the effect that I like wines even in the more modern Right Bank style provided they have some age on them. And I'm considering it as a cellar prospect.

I don't now this wine, Ryan, because it comes from the Bernard Magrez stable, whose wines I tend to avoid. I attended a tasting of some of his wines a few years ago and thought them caricatures of the "modern" approach, especially the whites which were horribly oaky. I experimented with his Toro and his Uruguayan Tannat recently and disliked them both at a quite young age, though I don't exclude their improving with time. That said, I wouldn't say "no" if someone offered me a glass of 10 year old Pape-Clément or Fombrauge.

Can you buy an experimental bottle and let us know how it is?

Rumour has it that Magrez, aged 79, is hoping to acquire a top "trophy" estate, Latour, etc., to crown his lifetime's achievement.

I actually wish I would have just grabbed a bottle to test drive yesterday. The price is very reasonable. But it should be noted that I live an hour from there, so I can't simply pop over, unfortunately. I'll also want to wait until the next time I buy a mixed case so I can get the discount on it.

Thanks Tim for your thoughts!

My only experience with Fombrauge was the 1970, which I was in decline but still very nice in 2009. But I'm assuming it's a dramatically different estate now.
