WTN: Two Itals, two Bojos

by Jenise » Thu Oct 01, 2015 3:38 pm

2008 Castello di Bossi Corbaia Toscana IGT Super Tuscan Blend
Black and blue fruit, cocoa dust, sturdy tannins. Drinkable now but it's on the rustic side texturally and has work to do in resolving/knitting together. Next bottle: 2020. Btw, I guess I'm finally growing up: I pulled this last night to pair with a pasta dish and no recollection of when I bought it or why, I thought it was just a little rosso. When I discovered upon recording the damage in CellarTracker that it was instead a $50+ wine, I wasn't even a little non-plussed.

2007 Terrabianca Campaccio Toscana IGTSuper Tuscan Blend
Pleasurable now with red fruit, leather and old world Italian-ness, but softens and becomes more complex/intriguing with 2+ hours of air time. One of my fave Italian reds. Will try to keep my hands off remaining bottles for a few years.

2009 Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée Corcelette Gamay
Brambly bojo essence with black olives and spicey-bark notes. Vivid and nervy, good structure. Not as much secondary development as the 09 Lapierre MMIX we had earlier this week; should cellar well in the mid-term ahead.

2009 Marcel Lapierre Morgon Cuvée MMXI Gamay
Sweeter than the Foillard with silky mid-palate and finish. Absolute perfection right now for a middle aged high-end Beaujolais. I absolutely have to buy more Beaujolais than I have in the past.

Bonus cellar moment:

I'm sitting on the floor staring at a wall of wine when Bob walks in.

"Honey, what's WRONG?", he said when he saw the expression of utter despair on my face.

"I just discovered that I have three more of [a WA merlot blend that tastes like a blueberry-vanilla malt]. I thought they were gone."

If you like the 2009 wines, early word is that 2014 is another big and successful year in Beaujolais. I haven't tasted any yet, and the structural profile may very well be different from 2009 (from what I hear, there is likely to be more of it in 2014 than 2009), but if you like the richer side of Beaujolais, 2014 may be well worth exploring as opposed to 2012 or 2013.

Thanks for the tip, but I really do prefer the more restrained vintages like 12 and 13. I had a perfect little '13 Chiroubles the other day that is one of the most satisfying "every day" wines I can remember having, and I actually think it's little-ness is one of the most attractive things about it--didn't post a TN because the bottle went away before I could note the name, it was previously unfamiliar to me, but I to plan to buy more. Wines like that are a refuge from the oversized wines I'm surrounded by here in WA, and the most food-friendly. But these two 09's (my last of that vintage) were nonetheless delightful.

No. Non-plussed is less than zero. Plussed would be more than zero. I was just zero. :)

I'm confused by name. Do you mean the Cuvee Marcel Lapierre? If so, wouldn't that be MMIX? :)

If it is a plain label that says Marcel Lapierre in large letters with vintage in roman numerals, it's the Cuvee Marcel Lapierre (top bottling).

Understood, and that's what this was. But the mixup in the roman numerals MMXI vs MMIX for vintage 2009 came from the listing on CellarTracker.

Yes, see that listing. You can transfer your note to the correct wine:

I wish I had some of that!!

OK, I have to guess, although I know several that could quality - Long Shadows Pedestal?

Not Pedestal--though I understand why you said that! It was Lost River. Went to a presentation by the winemaker, liked him a lot, got fooled by the structure of the 08 vintage, bought a mixed case. You know how those things go. Fast forward five years: they're very well made wines, but relentlessly new world in style and, regardless of grape, as the tannins have relaxed the heavy vanilla malo-oak thing is left holding the bag and the wines all taste malted to me. And as the wife of malted milk ball candy's biggest fan, I have had countless opportunities to change my mind to absolutely no avail.

Thanks for the notes.

The 14 Bojos are showing up now but I have yet to try one although I hear good things. Still loving the 13s.

Indeed. This weekend I had my first 2013 Chamonard Morgon, which was pretty and tasty but I can see a lot more development ahead. I also had another gorgeous bottle of 2013 Foillard CdP. But, am curious to try the 2014s of both.
