WTN: 2001 Donnhoff Brucke Spatlese

by David M. Bueker » Mon Sep 28, 2015 7:31 pm

2001 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Nahe (9/28/2015)
Well into early maturity, this is showing plenty of youthful fruit, but also a honeyed, spicy edge. On entry it's rich, and has layers of flavors, showing close to auslese in character. Then through the mid-palate things change, and a burst of acidity comes in enlivening the wine, and lingering long after it is swallowed. I would put this "at peak" with a long and delicious future. Drink some if you have it, but no hurry.

Isn't it too soon to be tapping into the 2001's? Any one that I have had felt like it was bottled a year or two ago. My only complaint is that I have so few of them. A really transcendent vintage.

They are really starting to turn a corner. I am staying away from the Prums, but Selbach, Donnhoff and Grunhaus have shown well for me lately.

I was lucky enough to go to M-S-R for the first time in 2002 late summer, so every producer had the 2001 ready to sell.
I have plenty of Dr. Loosen, Reinold Haart, Fritz Haag, Karthauserhof and Grans Fassian.
Have the Donnhoff Spatlese O.B. 2001 too, but was a present from a friend some years later. In my database is...matched to 2020/2021.
My first time in Oberhausen was in 2004 and was the beginning of a long love story. :!:

I really would recommend trying one. I do like my Riesling with age, and this was just gorgeous. After about an hour of air it had all the complexity you could ever want.

Love the 2001 Germans. Thought I bought a ton, but now probably down to a case or two (and maybe 2-3 bottles of Donnhoff)

I agree. The only disappointment was Müller; they were great in their fruit phase, but now they are quite simply to acidic.

Egon Muller? I ask because I have not had any of their 2001s.

Yes, indeed. You will need sugarcubes, today.
