WTN: Ghostwriter PN - If only I had more time in this life!

by Rahsaan » Thu Sep 24, 2015 10:03 pm

I recently tried a few bottles of Ghostwriter Pinot Noir. I have enjoyed their Chardonnay in the past and am always excited to see diverse expressions of Californian wine. So I am happy to explore these wines. And in an alternate universe/life I might be happy to explore the nuances of Santa Cruz wines even further. But right now - for whatever reason (Burgundy, ahem, Burgundy) - I just don't seem to have the time!

The 2012 Aptos Creek was crisp firm dark and savory. I wasn't sure what to expect, but this certainly didn't evoke my stereotypical image of round and juicy California pinot noir. Who knows what may happen to the firmness with age? But for the moment, the inelegant beet root aspects remind me of inelegant renditions of German pinot noir, and have the commonality of lacking the Burgundy pixie dust. Still, I don't pretend to understand this wine. And it was certainly interesting.

The 2012 Belle Farms was much easier to like. Softer, rounder, juicier, but also plenty fragrant and relatively fine and delicate. Fun, but with structure, and this seems to have all the components. Again, in an alternate universe with more time I would be following this wine closely!

With more time or more money/capacity?

No, in this case it's mainly about time, in the sense that I pretty much only drink wine on the weekends so I cannot go into depth with that many producers/bottlings.

The wines aren't dirt cheap, but these were $45, which seems like a fair price to me, and is certainly approachable. But, it just doesn't make sense for my work/sleep schedule to drink much during the week, so that cuts down on time!

Hey, Rahsaan,
I finally got to Rue Cler in Durham on Friday night. I thought the food was on a level with Vin Rouge and nice wine selections. Saturday I had lunch in north Raleigh at Vinos Finos (will post on both meals and the wines tried.)

Glad you enjoyed it. The wine list is really special.

I was actually at the Counting House on Friday night, just a few blocks away from Rue Cler. The wine list is not nearly as good as Rue Cler, but there are good things to drink and the food was delicious and a bit creative, plus the atmosphere is interesting (in the modern artistic way). I also hear good rumblings about the restaurant in the new Durham Hotel. Lots of options for such a small 'town'.

Read about Counting House in a Durham visitors' guide at my hotel. If you haven't tried Nana's yet (on University Drive) you should do so, maybe for a splurge evening and make a reservation and use valet parking.
