WTN: La Vie en Rose' (three rose' wines)

by JC (NC) » Mon Sep 21, 2015 4:10 pm

I included three rose' wines in the Food, Wine and Movie Night church fundraiser--one each from Beaujolais, France, Spain, and California and from three grape varieties (Gamay, Grenache, and Pinot Noir.) We had the wines with Tara's meatballs and various cheeses.

Notes are partially reprinted from CellarTracker:

2014 Laurent Gauthier Beaujolais Villages Rose'. Opened September 12 and finished at home Sept. 14 and 15. 12.5% abv. Pale blush color. In a blind tasting I doubt that I would be able to identify this as from the Gamay grape. It seems a bit generic. Yet it was reasonably priced (under $15) and okay for its use as a summer sipper. Seems to have a hint of spice on the finish.

2014 Muga Rioja Rosado La Rioja Alta, Rioja, Spain. Grenache or Garnacha blend. 13% abv. Approximately the same color as the Beaujolais rose' wine--a pale blush color. My favorite rose' wine of the summer. Delicate red berries (strawberry) and citrus notes, opening with fruit and finishing with an acidic kick. As I said of an earlier bottle this summer, medium-length finish and balanced in regard to acidity and fruit. Opened September 12 and revisited Sept. 15.

2014 Lucia Pinot Noir Lucy Rose' Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey County, CA. 14.1% abv. Produced and bottled by the Pisoni family. One dollar from the sale of every bottle is donated to breast cancer research. The color is an attractive mid-coral color. It was definitely darker than the Beajolais or Spanish wines and also higher in alcohol. Red berries on the nose and palate. Strawberries with kiwi (?) and lemon accents. Refreshing and pleasant. This is the second vintage I have purchased (also 2012) and it may become an annual purchase. I initially gave it 87 points but on revisiting it I raised that to an 88. This wine got mixed reviews from the small crowd at the church fundraiser. Some really liked it and some didn't. I found it quite delicious and had some at home with chicken teriyaki. It would also go with grilled salmon or shrimp or dark-meat chicken. Probably my second favorite rose' of the summer coming in slightly behind the Muga Rosado.

Muga's a perennial buy for us, too.
