WTN: Sancerrely Yours--three white wines

by JC (NC) » Thu Sep 17, 2015 5:24 pm

We had a food, wine and movie night fundraiser at my church Sept. 12. I will post first on the three white wines. The Sancerre wines were tasted with cold asparagus with extra virgin olive oil and shreds of Parmesan cheese, a German cucumber salad, spinach dip on bread, and Chevre goat cheese. The Chardonnay was sipped with crab dip on bread and Cheddar cheese.

Reprinted from CellarTracker:
2012 Lucien Crochet "Le Chene" Sancerre, Loire Valley, France.
13% abv. Pale gold color with clarity. Slight sniff of acetone on the nose and a hint of grapefruit on the palate. Pure fruit notes without grassy or vegetal leanings. This paired very nicely with a cucumber salad (thinly-sliced cucumber with vinaigrette and fresh dill) takeout from a German restaurant. It also was a good match to spinach dip on bread and Chevre goat cheese. It was the favorite of three white wines at a church fundraiser getting mostly "A" grades from the small crowd.

2013 Alphonse Mellot "La Moussiere" Sancerre, Loire Valley, France.
13% abv. To my taste this wine tasted a bit bland next to the 2012 Lucien Crochet "Le Chene" Sancerre. At the church fundraiser, the Lucien Crochet was the decisive winner in a comparison of the two wines. Lengthy finish but something seems atypical in the palate impression. I don't know how much is attributable to the vintage difference and how much to vineyards or winemaking style. I see that I am in the minority in my rating on CellarTracker. I have one remaining bottle to drink in the next year and will see if perhaps this was an off bottle.

2014 Mythic Mountain Chardonnay, Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina.
Labeled as 13.5% abv. Apple notes--more baked apple than crisp, tart apple. Still tastes about the same three days after it was opened (opened at a church fundraiser Sept. 12.) At the fundraiser I gave it a grade of B-. It also got some "C" grades from others. It was the least popular of three white wines at the tasting but is a decent wine--not flawed.

In the next day or two I will post on the three rose' wines and then on the two red wines and one dessert wine.

I haven't had a L. Crochet white in a while, but his '14 rose was one of my faves of the year.
My only Mellot experience was a tad flabby, but unsure if producer or vintage- not clear on 2010
