Shared this dinner wine ystrday w/ John:
1. Statti gaglioppo IGT: Calabria (13%; www.Statti.It) LameziaTerme 2014: Med.color; rather fragrant/grapey/cherry/bit Sangio-like slight herbal/rosemary/marigold/musky/earthy nose; rather tart/lean/astringent/rough/coarse some grapey/bit cherry-Sangio-like some earthy/marigold/musky/herbal flavor w/ light some coarse/bitey tannins; med.long tart/metallic/tangy somewhat grapey/Sangio-like/coarse/rough/rustic finish w/ light/astringent tannins; some Sangio-like cherry character but not the high-toned aromatics of Sangio; clean & well-made but a bit on the coarse/rustic/hot-climate side; a DagoRed kind of wine. $18.00 (AV)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Gaglioppo is apparently, by DNA, a Sangiovese X Mantonico Bianco cross. Not clear when this cross occurred, nor where, but it was a long time ago. Morellino Pizzuto, a variety found up in Tuscany, is the identical grape.
