I decided Labor Day weekend would be a good time to open a red wine from Down Under in memory of this New Zealander whom I met at a previous MO'COOL event. I went with my final bottle of the 2003 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon John Riddoch Limited Release from South Australia. The John Riddoch was produced in years which the estate judged to be exceptional vintages. It revealed ripe dark fruits on the nose and palate. I found some plumskin in an earlier bottle and also black tea, but this time it seemed that black currants took the lead. Oak spice is detectable but not overbearing IMHO. This was a rich, mellow wine with a slightly puckery finish. Regrettably, last I checked, Wynns wines are no longer imported into the USA.
