WTN: Pol Roger Bouchard Esmonin Lynch Bages Beaucastel

Some notes from a dinner with friends.

2002 Pol Roger Brut – nice yeasty nose, clean fresh finish, and some good concentration in the middle. Nice bubble.

2004 Latour Giraud Meursault Genevrieres – some mild oxidative notes in the nose put me off a tad. Fair bit of colour – yellowing. Sweet finish. Was better with food if only because it masked the oxidation.

2004 Bouchard Pere et Fils Meursault Genevrieres – green tint to this one, and a clean excellent nose of fruit and citrus. Clean, long, enjoyable.

2004 Frederic Esmonin Ruchottes Chambertin – a great nose with iron, spice, and dark cherry, rich and sweet in the mouth and with excellent acidity levels. Very tasty!

1995 Confuron Contedidot Vosne Romanee Les Suchots – corked!

1999 Lynch Bages – Medium dark colour, good black currant nose, fair bit of acidity, ready to go!

2003 Beaulieu Vineyards Georges de Latour - this should have been a very decent wine. It wasn’t. It had an estery nose, and was overly acidic. Spoiled. Damn!

1998 Ch. De Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape – mid colour, good nose, ripe in the mouth (no doubt the vintage) good frit levels and medium length. All wines were tasted blind. We thought this was a New World wine and we were all big Rhone fans!

1985 Balthazar Ress Von Unserm Riesling Eiswein – this Rheingau wine was amber and had a waxy nose that had me thinking of the Loire. Tad of VA, and lots of residual sugar but nicely offset by acidity. Interesting.

That '04 Esmonin sounds lovely. No GM taint. Seems like the greenies are backing off in '04 Burgs.

Wow. That has been said before. But wouldn't it be great if it were true.

(In the abstract sense, personally I never kept any as my storage is too small for such risks. But still, it would be interesting.)

I still have a 2004 Domaine Robert Chevillon N-S-G Vielles Vignes which I may open in the next six months. The previous bottle was drinkable if not up to the usual expectations.
