My Pinot Grigio has a bright coppery hue!

Here is a winner that I have been drinking a few times this past short summer up here!

WTN: 2014 Tenuta di Corte Giacobbe Pinot Grigio Ramato, Venezie Italy.

Is it an orange wine or a pinkie? $18 Cdn, 12.5% alc. Good natural cork, read that the must remains in contact with the skins for at least 24 hrs. Nice richness and complexity here, great acidity too. First time I have come across this style of PG.
From start to finish, very full in style, almost cleansing. Some savoury tones on the nose with a hint of peach. Slight tannins, citrus, nice round out on the finish after a soft mid-palate. It is not that complex but has a terrific fruit balance. Serve it to guests and see if they can guess it is a Grigio!

Well, Bob.....since PinotGris (and GWT and GrenacheGris) all have have a light pigmentation in the skins as they get ripe,
if you make them w/ much skin-contact, they're going to pick up some of that color...to varying degrees depending upon the amount and length of skin contact. "Ramato" is the name they use in Friuli for that genre. Toccatta (LouisLucas of Lucas&Lewellyn) in LosAlamos make a Ramato that's quite nice. ForlornHope and ChanningDaughters also make a PG Ramato.

Fully ripe, Pinot Gris (Grigio) grapes are almost indistinguishable from Pinot Noir, but they don't have the same level of pigmentation. I just got some of each last week, but they were picked early, as I am planning bubbly with them. The Pinot Gris were still dark red, while the Pinot Noir was black, even though the ripeness level was the same.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

“Ramato” in Italian means “auburn” (reddish-brown or copper colored).

Jumping on to the pile here, that's why they call the stuff "Gris": The grapes are naturally darker than white, lighter than "black."

Sounds like the Donkey and Goat Pinot Gris last week! Five days on skin contact, and definitely a bright coppery hue!
