Home Wine Tasting Party Experience

by Sam Platt » Mon Aug 31, 2015 2:25 pm

This past weekend we attended one of those home wine tasting parties at a friend’s house. It was put on by a company who offered “exclusive access to premium wines from the world’s best wine regions.” It was our first experience with this type of tasting.

The format consisted a blind tasting of the wine followed by glowing introduction by a very well rehearsed and engaging presenter. Each wine had a back story with details of the grape, the style and the region. The wines were almost stupid simple across the board and not terribly exciting to anyone with any experience. Some of the wines, particularly the reds served cold, were just not drinkable. They are very overpriced to boot. In looking up the producers it appears that they only produce wines for this company. I assume that they are buying leftover grapes on the cheap, in region and making rather generic wine from them.

That being said, we did have a good time with our friends and ended up buying a mixed case and half to help the cause. My wife even nailed two of the wines blind – one an Italian Chardonnay and the other a Hungarian Muscat (she said 2 put Tokai).

MoCool this was not!

Was this one of the Pieroth companies., or newer ones?
I've never been but have been subjected to wines purchased at these events.

Dale,

Yes, the wines were from Pieroth.

Own label wines so the consumer cannot compare prices.

To be sure.

Sam, you don't happen to need a bridge from Brooklyn, do you?

No Thomas, but I am looking for a lightly used pig-in-a-poke if you have one available. :)

I will say that the event was lots of fun. It just required that I be non-judgmental and remain in the moment. Finding merthiolate and mustard notes in a syrah based blend is interesting at the very least.

Understood at all levels. You were good to buy so much!

Sam-
Sounds like it's time for new friend's. Friends don't invite friends to such events. At least Norwex has decent, if somewhat overpriced products.

I love my friends, Bill. They love drinking wine, they just don't know sh*t about it.

My dream is to get my geek/MoCool friends together with my non-geek wine drinking friends at a venue near Ann Arbor where I can hire local MS Madeline Triffon to put on tasting of wines that are actually good. Everyone would learn something and we would all go home with stuff we actually enjoy drinking.

Bucket list!

One of an august handful of prospective advertisers who've approached us, money in hand, ready to sponsor WLP/WLDG, and I've felt compelled to tell them, "HELL, NO!" Okay, what I really say to folks like that is, "Sorry, but I don't think your product is a good fit for us," then decline to engage in further conversation.

I'm with you there, Sam. Even drinking somewhat crummy wine with good friends is still drinking wine with good friends.

I love your idea of putting on a first-rate tasting for them though. Of course, their wallets may hate you forever after that but sometime you gotta do what you gotta do.

If you arrange such a tasting within a day or two before or after MO'COOL can I be included?
