New Vintage Berkeley Wines!

by Brian K Miller » Mon Aug 31, 2015 11:07 am

Did an "urban bicycle ride" yesterday, and at the end visited Broc Cellars and Donkey and Goat on Fifth Street near Gilman.

Two lovely Anderson Valley wines for dinner that night (fantastic eggplant parmesan with extra pesto added for enhanced flavor!)

2014 Donkey and Goat Pinot Gris Anderson Valley. A new vineyard planted by organic farmers that Jarred and Tracy sourced for their new wine. This wine had five days of skin contact so featured that salmon-y color. Rich in the mouth, with notes of mandarin and tea. Restrained acidity for a D&G wine  I really enjoyed this wine! I also tasted their red Rhone blend, the 2013 "513", and it is really coming around. Higher acidity, but some lovely red plum fruit and minerally/saline notes. Quite nice!

2014 Broc Cellars Nero D'Avola Mendocino County. I really, really liked the past vintage of this wine, which sold out pretty quickly. At the winery, the blackberry fruit was kicking. However, with the meal, my bottle also showed some lovely earthy notes. Lower alcohol. Not too acidic. Lovely blackberry fruit, but also quite savory and earthy. Went very well with the eggplant!
