This time, following a blues guitarist friend, I rode my Felt bicycle to GREEN VALLEY southwest of Fairfield proper. Beautiful late summer day, the brief overcast and even some mist cleared away (hopefully a foretaste of a future wet year?)
GV CELLARS is located off Green Valley Road at the end of Mason Road, tucked beneath the westernmost ridgeline in Solano County. There has been a winery here for decades-previous labels have include DeLeu Cellars.
Anyway, they had a first class pizza truck, and the wines were actually quite nice. Everything, even the cabs, was well below $30. Highlights for me included a dry, tangy, and savory Rose of Syrah, a Green valley Carrignane that caught the weedy/herbal character of the grape spot on, and two cabernets that surprised me-I do not look to Solano County for cabernet. The 2012 and 2011 even showed distinct vintage character-the winemaker is not over-processing things here!
A nice afternoon. Very good muci, generous pours of wine, and delicious pizza!
