2012 Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Großes Gewächs - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (8/17/2015)I hope this was shut down, as it gave little to no pleasure. Stark, steely and notably bitter on the finish, it was a distraction at the meal instead of an accompaniment. I see elsewhere that this has close to the limit of residual sugar for a dry wine, but you could not tell that from this bottle. It showed bone dry. A very rare dissatisfying experience with a Willi Schaefer wine. I'll let my other 2 bottles rest in the cellar in the hope that this was just a shut down situation.

David, have you had many good "trocken" wines from the Mosel area? I used to think that some RS was necessary for balance in this northerly region but I did enjoy a lot von Schubert's '08 Abtsberg Alte Reben spätlese trocken. Climate change may be helping but my own experience is very limited.

I have had a few, but I prefer dry wines from the Rheingau, Nahe and Rheinhessen.
What I do enjoy is Mosel Feinherb. That touch of noticeable RS makes a huge difference.

Thanks for note
Disappointing Willi S. is a phrase I don't think I've ever used, but never had a dry one
Like you and Tim I think I prefer my MSR wines with at least a bit of noticable RS

I too seem to prefer my MSR wines with at least a bit of noticable RS.
