MichellePadburg came down ystrday to the Unquarked Wine Bar to present some new Vivac wines. One I particularly liked:

VivacWnry 1725 Riesling EmbudoVlly/NM (11.5%; www.VivacWinery.com) 2014: Light gold color; rather earthy/stony/mineral/chalky very slight pineapple/apple/R quite interesting nose; quite tart very nearly dry rather stony/mineral/chalky/earthy very light R/floral/appley lean flavor; med.long quite tart very light R/appley/floral strong stony/mineral/earthy/chalky finish; quite an interesting rendition of NM R. $24.00

1. 1725 represents the yr the land where their vnyd is located, outside the tasting room, was granted to the Spanish. The 1725 is featured on the label in large print. Not sure how that got by the Feds as it could be mistaken as a vintage date.
This is their first crop of R of this 1725 EstateVnyd surrounding the wnry. I was rather impressed by this wine for Vivac's first effort at R. I applaud them for making it dry. In general, NM Riesling are a pretty sorry lot. Much of the R comes from Paola's Deming vnyd, which is much too hot for good R. Many/most of the NM Rieslings are too sweet and lacking in acidity to support all the sugar. This Vivac wine is not. It doesn't have a lot of R fruit, but I was attracted to its stony minerality. It, in fact, reminded me more of an AltoAdige R or Kerner more than anything. It should age, I would think, for another 5 yrs or more.
