WTN: Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2012

Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2012

I found this wine at a little wine shop while vacationing in northern Georgia. At $12.99/btl this is by far the best value wine I have had all year.

Color: Dark straw.

Nose: A hint of petrol on opening followed by citrus and some floral notes.

Taste: Super smooth honey and orange flavor. Nice acidity and a very appropriate amount of oak. A very well balanced, well made wine with an extended berry-ish finish. Unfortunately, I did not try this wine until we returned home. I would have purchased the remaining 6+ bottles had I known what a great QPR this juice would be. Highly recommended.

Note: I found this little wine shop at the back of a boutique in a tiny town in Georgia offering a mix of very nice wines at very good prices. Once he realized we were buyers he was popping corks on all sorts of interesting Italian, Sicilian, and Eastern European wines. Even had some lunch brought in! If we were truly one of his largest single purchases this year I have no idea how the guy stays in business. You just never know what you are going to find.

Yes! I was quite surprised. I never would have given the wine a second look without the shop owners recommendation and the low price.

It's one of several South African Chenins available here. They're all around $12- 15, taste good for the money and differ from one another in interesting ways. I'd like to try some South African Chenin at the next price point, but they are hard to find.

I've gone through a case of the Secateurs Red Blend with pleasure. Good inexpensive summer wine.
