WTN: 2009 Mugneret-Gibourg Bourgogne

by David M. Bueker » Thu Jul 16, 2015 7:56 pm

2009 Domaine Georges Mugneret/Mugneret-Gibourg Bourgogne - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne (7/16/2015)
Almost exactly 2 years since my last bottle, and this is as good as ever. I don't think it has evolved much, but no matter, as it is just essence of Burgundy. It is beautifully integrated, gently fruity, accented by warm herbs and subtle earth. It's haunting, and persistent, like a dream that won't clear from the mind. I have had the sisters' Bourgogne from other vintages, but this one reaches heights that go well beyond "basic" Burgundy. I can honestly say that if I had an endless supply of this wine I would be satisfied to have nothing else.

" I can honestly say that if I had an endless supply of this wine I would be satisfied to have nothing else." Wow! High praise indeed. Is that only as far as red wine goes or would you be willing to forego your Rieslings also?

Reds.

Laura would kill me if we had no Riesling or Champagne in the house.

David has already spoken for himself, but I confess to having had the same (perhaps counter-intuitive) emotional reactions to some wines. In my experience it's usually these 'lower level' wines that sing such enthusiastic songs and make you respond with equal excitement. It's almost like the higher level wines know what they have going on, and delight in making you come to them.
