WTN: 2009 Selbach-Oster Riesling Anrecht

by David M. Bueker » Tue Jul 14, 2015 7:48 pm

2009 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Himmelreich Riesling Anrecht - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (7/14/2015)
Not surprising, but this is still very primary, with lots of peachy fruit, apple and lime nuances and some steely finishing minerality. It's still quite rich/sweet, but the balance is very good. Further aging is warranted, though all mine are now gone!

Big price up here David, close to $60 Cdn. Maybe not the same vintage I guess.

What does Anrecht mean, David? Is it a parcel in Himmelreich? Or simply a brand? As the wine is sweet, it doesn't sound like a VDP designation but I don't see a prädikat.

Hi Tim,

The Anrecht is indeed a specific parcel in the Zeltinger Himmelreich. It is one of three parcel bottlings from Selbach-Oster, along with the Zeltinger Schlossberh Schmitt and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Rotlay. They are picked as a block, with varying levels of ripeness, expressing the vineyard at that moment in time. When they first came into being they did have a pradikat, but Johannes Selbach elected to drop that after several vintages. Schmitt, the first to be bottled, was an Auslese from 2003-2006, and a Spatlese in 2007 (that 2007 is a stunning wine by the way). Rotlay was an Auslese from 2004-2007. Anrecht was Spatlese in 2008. None of them have had a pradikat since that time.

One other interesting note is that the Rotlay parcel was once partly owned by the J. J. Prum estate. When the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr was reorganized due to Fleurbereinigung, Selbach-Oster ended up with the entire parcel. It also was not replanted during the process, so the vines are older.
