Rubicon TN, Please

by Marlyne K » Mon Jun 29, 2015 4:03 pm

We were just gifted with a bottle of '05 Rubicon. Any info on it would be greatly appreciated. It was for our major anniversary, and although we're ready to drink it, we want to know it's ready for us!
Thanks so much!

Had one with friends just a couple months ago. It's in peak form right now, that stage in which primary fruit recedes into the background and shares the stage with the elegance and complexity of secondary development. Kind of like a handsome man at 50. Or maybe 49. :) Enjoy!

Thank you for encouraging us to open rather than cellar. We shared the bottle with the friends who were the instrument of our meeting those 50 years ago, and with whom we've remained close.
It has been a long time since we've had a wine this full-bodied, and that had such a long finish. We're still "tasting" it, and talking about it. Smooth, mouth-filling...I'm no good at flavor-descriptors, just that this was wonderful.
Thanks again.

Marlyne, so glad that worked out. Nice occasion for opening, too!

Hi Marlyne - Here is my note:

2005 Inglenook Rubicon - Dec 6, 2014

Color: Deep red.

Nose: After two hour decant light nose of cherry and cured meat.

Taste: Cherry and raisins with lots of heat. Sort of port like. This is a big wine, but in a disjointed way.

FYI - The 2005 is the third vintage of Rubicon I have tasted and I have not been terribly impressed with any of them. At the price point I don't plan to buy any more. Hope that you have better luck than I have.

PS: Just realized that you had already tasted the '05 Rubicon. Very glad that your experience was better than mine.

Sam, We didn't decant it at all. Had expected heavy tannins and, as there were some crystals on the cork, looked for residue. I had the last bit from the bottle, and there simply wasn't either.
We're glad, too, that the experience was a good one. We don't get the "higher-end" stuff very often, and when it's a bust, it really takes the fun out of it. Or, it's a learning experience!

03 Rubicon, poster boy for over the top. Port like, not balanced, I'm glad this was a gift and not something I paid for even wholesale.. Maybe it's better in different vintages, I don't like roasted wines.
