Porter Creek and Campo Vida

by Brian K Miller » Mon Jun 29, 2015 11:07 am

A feww nice wines this weekend:

2012 Porter Creek "Fiona Hill" Pinot Noir. deliciously earthy and funky version of Pinot. Perhaps lacks "pinosity", but I really enjoyed the savory character of this wine, and I like a touch of Brett???? so this was a winner to me.

Campo Vida is a Mendocino-based (Hopland) winery which focuses on organic and biodynamic wines. The owners restore very nice industrial buildings as a sideline, and they have a tasting room in the industrial wastelands of Oakland (midway between West Oakland BART and Jack London Square) that is perfectly located for cyclists! This weekend, I tasted the 2014 Rose of Syrah which was savory and bracing in its salmon-skin colored glory. The 2013 Nero D'Avola was also delicious, with red fruit, again bracing acidity, some nice cherry fruit, and a hint of tomato leaf that added an extra pleasant note. Finally, the 2013 Terra Rosa, a blend primarily of Sangio and Cab, was again deliciously savory and earthy, like a quite nice SuperTuscan. Very delicious, actually!

That Pinot Noir sounds like just the type I really like. What was the cost and abv? I doubt that I will see it in Ohio however.

I think I recall high 30s. Alcohol relatively restrained for California.
Not a big producer, so...
If you ever make it out here, the tasting room is well worth a visit. Basically a tiny, cramped converted garage. I like almost all of their wines-they make a killer Carrignan and a deliciously Rhonesque Syrah.

I'm with you on Porter Creek, Brian. I like their Hillside Pinot Noir, though it's a bit expensive - $50+.

Yeah...we tried it as well and ended up preferring the Fiona Hill at that time and place!

I like their neighbors down the road too, Moshin, although their wines are more hit and miss than PC's.

Lots of respected names used fruit from Moshin Vineyard before Moshin started their own brand. Gary Farrell for one. Davis Bynum for another.
