2013 Forlorn Hope Pinot Gris Dragone Ramato Rorick Vineyard - USA, California, Sierra Foothills, Calaveras County (6/20/2015)After a few misses from this producer, this was a very interesting hit. I had never before had a wine that smelled like a grilled pork chop, but this was it. There was also some fruit, but I kept coming back to grilled pork!

I could see that in a northern Rhone-style Syrah - grilled pork isn't THAT far from the characteristic bacon descriptor.
I've got to wonder how they make it happen in a white, though! Do you suspect oak or yeast or something else?

Well this was an "orange" wine. The stuff was actually about as red as a Trousseau.

Ahhh. Thanks for the follow-up. I was having a hard time grasping the idea of a Pinot Gris with meaty smoke character, but "orange" says it all.
