WTN: Foillard Côte du Py, 2012 and 2013

by Rahsaan » Sat Jun 20, 2015 11:38 pm

Tonight I had a gorgeous bottle of 2013 Foillard Côte du Py, the best yet, such deep elegant silk. I expect more from future bottles but this was pretty darn special.

Last night's 2012 was also interesting because previous bottles had been somewhat tart (in a less than stellar way). But for whatever reason it all come together yesterday and was light lithe singing and dancing Foillard silk that even got deeper with more air. And was so intoxicating with the perfume. But I have no more. So that was it.

Thanks Rahsaan. I have heard so little about recent vintages that every note is important.

As you may have heard, 2012 was a lean year in Beaujolais. Of course top producers made good (or even great) wines, but given my limited storage I was happy to drink them all up. So will just have to live with missing out on some of their development. (With the exception of '12 Griffe du Marquis, i just got the bottles recently and haven't even tasted one yet, plan to do that next weekend)

'13 is a much more 'normal' vintage, nothing crazy big or lean, just straightforward deliciousness.

Thanks Rahsaan. I've had some very good 2012s, but can't think of a one where I thought it was a great vintage. Happier with 2013 so far. Haven't had the Foillard yet, though see its at CSW. Just had Lapierre '13, which I've consistently loved, though had someone tell me they tasted theirs and sold (didn't get chance to ask her why).

When did you start drinking it? I forget when I had my first Lapierre 2013, sometime in the winter, not sure if it was end of 2014 or early 2015, but my first bottles of Lapierre were definitely not as enticing or harmonious as the last, which I finished this spring.

But then again for whatever reason, Lapierre doesn't speak to me in the same way Foillard, Chamonard and Descombes do. Still, hard to see why someone would be offended and sell the wine, if they liked it in other vintages.

Thanks for the note. I love that wine.

Cheers,

Believe it or not I have never had a Descombes wines, and only ever had one from Chamonard.

Despite all the talk about Beaujolais being a mainly mass produced wine, I find that there are so many high quality smaller producers being sold these days from all sorts of villages that it is impossible to follow all of them.

Late fall , though from my scores (inconsistent though they are) I've liked the ones drunk in spring a bit more

Drank a bottle last night and it was gorgeous. Deep intense and so seductively pleasurable. I'm sure it will age and I'm happy to have more, but these are fine wines.
