Who here aerates their wine?

by gordon.olds » Fri Jun 19, 2015 12:25 am

I just recently purchased a wine aerator to let my wine breathe before tasting it and all i can say is WOW what a difference! has anybody here experienced this pleasure? if so i highly recommend trying it out.
I can't believe how much better red wine tastes after it's been aerated to perfection.

I have three different aerators. I have tried them all. They now gather dust. Do they have an effect? Perhaps. I prefer to decant or allow the wine to evolve in the glass. Call me old school. ;)

Hi, Gordon! If the aerator brings you delight, I say go for it! Personally, I'm somewhat on board with David ... by letting wine air in the decanter or glass over the course of the evening, I can watch it as it evolves, and there's joy in that also.

Here's an interesting trick, if you want to do a wine experiment sometime: Try a glass oxygenated with the aerator. Then try a glass that's been buzzed in your blender for a few seconds. Compare and contrast. I have no idea what differences (if any) this test would reveal, but it would be fun to find out!

Curious as to which brand of aerator you like so much, Gordon??

I tried the Vinturi brand when it came out some yrs ago. I found it to be absolutely of no benefit.
It turned out, the model they sent me swirled the wine in the clockwise direction and was skilfully
designed for use in the Southern Hemisphere. I requested they send me the model that swirled
the wine counter-clockwise, appropriate for the Northern Hemisphere. But they never sent me it.

I'm with David.
Open, follow as it develops. If tight and needs air, decant. If really tight, slosh decant.

Gordon, the responses you've received so far really detail the difference in priorities that is journey vs. destination. I have a Vinturi but only use it when opening a very young bottle of an unfamiliar wine that I want to get an instant 'read' on. Otherwise, I'm usually drinking more mature bottles that don't need that kind of assistance, or have an hour or so to splash-decant it and wait before drinking. But they do speed things up, you're right--I've seen them used a lot in wineries trying to get more show out of an otherwise backwards bottle.

Sure I aerate young wines...

Open the bottle 30 mins before dinner, pour first measure into a large glass, no morethan 1/3 full. Take opportunity to taste incase of cork taint.

Simple.

Yeah, I never understood the need for a gadget to aerate when pouring, swirling, and letting it sit are free and readily available.

I use a KitchenAid blender with the double beater. It is really efficient on those young Malbec/Tannat blends from Cahors.

So glad to see the thoughtful replies from Gordon. No troll there!

FWIW I find aerators to be similar to homeopathic medicine. It works if you believe it works. Maybe Dr. Oz will push them!

Not sure I'd call it a troll. He didn't seem to be pushing any particular aereator. Seemed like a pretty general question.

This one not only aerates the wine, but it also brings "art" to the ritual.

At TRIbella™, we love all wine aerators! Many products have the science of mixing air with wine to "open up the flavors of a red wine" perfectly sorted out. What seems to be amiss is the art, as wine is both beautiful and magical. If you have ever been to a vineyard, you can feel the passion ooze from each and every story the winery would share. At TRIbella™, our solution for aeration was to marry the art and the science – as well as pay the greatest of respect to the wine, the wine maker, and the artisan who created your wine glass. The perfectly engineered, patented, unfussy TRIbella™ wine aerator will pour that wonderful red fluid in three perfect streams. The air between the streams will allow your wine to naturally breathe, while the beauty of the pour will delight you and your guests with each and every glass.
Aeration
It is no surprise that wine experts agree that "opening up" a red wine to breathe is often the secret to enhancing the beauty of its taste. People have successfully decanted red wine for centuries, and in recent years, there have been devices-a-plenty to help speed the aeration process. Our TRIbella™ aerator allows you to pour and aerate your red wine with both joy and elegance. We think that it is just wonderful to see art and science sharing a glass of red…together. TRIbella Box

OK, Thomas...I stand corrected. But it was a subtle troll...not one of the more blatant ones!!

Don't think he's a troll. This is a nice guy who responded to at least one other thread.

No troll. He responded to at least one other thread.

The bottom line is that his post resulted in a useful conversation. If anybody googles "wine aerator" and finds this discussion, they'll go away with useful information, although they may wonder what the off-topic digression about "trolls" was all about.

A suggestion, folks: We'll take care of the "real" trolls. You won't see posts hawking Viagra or fake Uggs boots let live here. But if the mods decide to let a wine-related post stand so we can respond with truthiness, let us do our work. We really don't need posts attacking noobs. It doesn't make us look good. If you think a post is problematic, send us a PM, okay?

There is no need for apologies, and I'd like a small course correction if I may: I may be the janitor around here, or as Bonzo once said, "I paid for this microphone."

But our esteemed body works best when we function as a community of peers, not a micromanaging boss telling everyone what to do. We also work best when we're open and welcoming to everyone who comes in here. If they later try to pick our pockets, we have ways of dealing with that. But in the short run, it's good to think before posting a comment that appears to be attacking a new arrival, even if we suspect that the new arrival is up to no good.

I have to admit to re-gifting the last aerator I received. The friend I gave it to absolutely loves the thing. Win-win!

I didn't know what an aerator was until I read this thread :? . If I feel that a wine is going to need air, usually a young probably closed wine, I decant. However almost as often as not, I feel after drinking that the wine has not on balance benefited from decanting. There can be a loss of that liveliness, focus and tension which I would prefer to slightly more open aromatics. Hence, I decant much less than a few years ago and never an older wine, except in the case of a very fine sediment which makes the wine cloudy when pouring glasses from the bottle. I don't mind at all larger sediment particles which settle rapidly in the glass after pouring.
