by TomHill » Sun Jun 14, 2015 8:26 pm

Cracked these three on Saturday:
1. PantherCreek PinotNoir BednarikVnyd/WillametteVlly (12.5%; 250 cs; U) 1994: Med.color w/ some bricking; somewhat earthy/loamy bit smokey/pencilly/oak light black cherry/PN quite complex oldPinot nose; fairly tart/tangy slight metallic strong smokey/pencilly/oak light earthy/rootcellar slight black cherry/PN/cherry complex oldPinot flavor w/ light smooth/graceful tannins; very long earthy/loamy strong smokey/pencilly/Fr.oak some black cherry/PN/black cherry cola fairly tart/tangy finish w/ light/smooth tannins; starting to fade some but still quite a pleasurable oldPinot. $36.00
_______________
2. PantherCreek PinotNoir SheaVnyd/WillametteVlly (12.5%; 130 cs; U) 1994: Rather brown/murkey color; quite earthy/loamy some pencilly/smokey nose w/ very little fruit; rather tart/metallic/tangy quite earthy/loamy little fruit slight oxidized flavoor w/ light/drying tannins; very little fruit, showing some oxidation and pretty much on its last legs. $36.00
_______________
3. PantherCreek PinotNoir FreedomHillVnyd/WillametteVlly (12.5%; 550 cs; U) 1994: Med.color w/ some bricking; less earthy/loamy more cherry/black cherry/PN fruit less complex nose; bit tart/tangy/metallic light earthy/loamy/rootcellar more bright cherry/PN fruit light smokey/oak flavor w/ light/smooth/bit bitey tannins and a trace of oxidation; very much like Bednarik. $36.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. The Bednarik and FreedomHill were very similar in character w/ more fruit in the FH but a little further along than the Bednarik and a bit simpler. Both were a pleasure to drink, though clearly starting to fade. The Shea was pretty much on it last legs and was left behind for Susan to drink inasmuch her standards for older wines are way below mine.

2 out of 3 ain't bad...

Not sure I would have expected such positive results.

I don't even quite see Dave's two out of three, looks like the best only had trace elements of oxidation. We had a '95 Oregon pinot in Vancouver on Friday (Clendenen's Ici/La-Bas label) that just rocked, no brown, no oxidation whatsoever, which caused us to reflect on what we knew back in the 90's. We Americans loved the 94's and pooh-poohed the 95's, but our Canadian friends, used to and preferring acidity in their wine and willing to wait, saw something better.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Well, Jenise....from that same case were some '94 Calif Pinots that were pretty much shot. I was expecting these to be equally shot.
So I was surprised that 2 of them had survived & were pleasurable. Nothing profound, but pleasurable.
