A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Cieliegiolo: This is a very old variety that apparently is native to Tuscany. It is often mistaken for Sangio in the area. It also has a presence in Umbria & Lazio as well. Cieliegiolo got together w/ a near-unknown SouthernItaly variety known as Calabrese di Montenuovo to produce....Sangiovese.
This is the first time I've tried (or even seen) Cieliegiolo. Though not a profound wine, this Cieliegiolo was quite an attractive red, better than many Chiantis I've had of late, and very much resembles a good Sangio. A lot like tasting ancient history.
