Carmel Valley Wineries?

by wnissen » Thu Jun 04, 2015 1:28 pm

We've got a morning to kill in Carmel Valley, and would like to visit a winery. I would stop in at Galante Vineyards, but they
aren't doing visits that day. The other ones I have personal experience with in the region, Talbott and Saba, have been
spotty. Any other ideas?

Julian, Bernardus, and Talbott are our favorites.

I would sure second Bernardus. Love their Bordeaux blend, Marinus, and their rich Sauvignon Blancs.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Carl, any particular varieties at Talbott? We're open, Chard is fine as long as it's not too alcoholic or oaky.

Jenise, I do remember the Marinus from a long time ago, I think we'll have lunch at their less formal restaurant.

I was quite disappointed to learn that the Cheese Shop in Carmel suffered not one but two floods and has no timeline to reopen. I hope they manage to get themselves up and running soon, and had good insurance.

We like the Kali Heart Chardonnay and the Sleepy Hallow Pinot Noir.

I remember sampling three Chards at Talbott ranging from neutral oak to a bit more oak influence. I thought they were all pretty well done and one of them at least should match your preferences. I have had lunch a couple times at Wickets Bistro at Bernardus Lodge, sitting outside and enjoying the environment. The food was good too.
Cima Collina Winery (Marina, CA near Monterey) has a tasting room in Carmel Valley Village. I have only tasted one Pinot Noir from this winery but was impressed with that one. I'm a bit hesitant to recommend it on the basis on one sampling.
Apparently Wickets Bistro had closed although it is still listed under "Dining" on a Bernardus Lodge website. I also saw references to "Lucia." Maybe that is a new restaurant replacing Wickets Bistro.
