Loire Valley Wine Dinner in Raleigh

by JC (NC) » Sat May 30, 2015 12:07 am

St. Jacques Restaurant hosted this event last Tuesday. I didn't take any notes during the dinner but was enjoying conversation with two couples at my end of the table.
We were greeted with LOUIS PERDRIER SPARKLING ROSE in Champagne flutes. This was a dry and refreshing drink and one I wouldn't mind on other occasions. We had an amuse bouche but I don't recall what it was.

With a bleu cheese panna cotta with dried fruit chutney, Port wine and spice reduction, we had 2014 DOMAINE PICHON VOUVRAY, a Chenin Blanc wine. I really like this one and ordered two bottles to pick up later. I will include it in a church wine tasting in August.

With escargots vol au vent (snails with puff pastry) we had 2013 SAUMUR RESERVE DES VIGNERONS, a different style of Chenin Blanc. I think I have liked previous vintages more than I did this one but others at my table seemed to enjoy its dry crispness.

The palate cleanser was a small scoop of Cabernet Sauvignon and cinnamon sorbet.

The main course was elk tenderloin with braised pork belly barley risotto with blueberry and veal reduction paired with 2011 Domaine de la Noblaie Chinon (Cabernet Franc.) I sometimes don't care for Cabernet Franc as a stand-alone variety and didn't finish my glass but one couple raved about it.

Dessert was peche Melba (vanilla ice cream, peaches, raspberry coulis and whipped cream.)

The Saumur group can produce some nice whites from time to time. Noblaie..I have tried some over the past few years but nothing really stunning.
