WTN: Two Old Whites...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue May 26, 2015 11:01 am

Tried these two last night:
1. Renwood Viognier AmadorCnty (14.5%; #2977 of 534 cs) ScottHarvey/Plymouth 1994: Deep gold/burnished bronze color; strong smokey/tobaccoy/oak some overripe peaches/Viog/spicy some nutty/caramel/butterscotchy/nutmeg/ButterFinger bit oxidized rather complex fragrant nose; very soft/fat/flabby off-dry/lush strong toasty/tobaccoy/oak very ripe peach/Viog/apricotty some nutty/oxidized strong caramel/butterscotch/ButterFinger flavor; long slight herbal strong caramel/butterscotch/ButterFinger slight nutty/oxidized strong toasty/tobaccoy/oak slight metallic finish; an interesting old Viog that's not totally shot and still offers up some pleasure.

2. KentRasmussenWnry Chard NapaVlly (13%) 1993: Light gold/bronze/bit browning color; strong tobaccoy/toasted/oak/toasted coconut/ZagNutBard/smokey slighht ripe/melony/Chardbit earthy complex oldChard nose; fairly tart/lean ripe Chard/melony/celery strong tobaccoy/smokey/toasty/oak/ZagNutBar bit earthy slight caramel/oxidized/browned butter/sage flavor; tart med.long very tobaccoy/toasty/oak/ZagNutBar some ripe/melony/Chard/earthy/celery bit caramelized/brown butter finish; still has some oldChard fruit hanging around and not at all unpleasant to drink.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Renwood: This Viog was a classic big/ripe/DollyParton Viog in its youth w/ very intense/over-the-top Viog character. Now well into old age; all the jiggly silicone as lost its shape and sagged down so much you have to tuck the pair into your waistband. It was really not unpleasant to drink and a nice trip down memory lane w/ Scott & Dolly.
______________
2. Rasmussen: I have, of course, followed KentRasmuussen's wines from the very start. From his Estate deep down in the Carneros, Pinot & Chard. His Chards always had a fair degree of ripeness to them, but a bracing acidity that veered away from soft & flabby. They were also rather reductive and often had a stinkiness to them upon release. I came to term this the "Rasmussen stench". It is, of course, a good indicator that the Chard would age well and they generally did. So I had expectations that this '93 would still be hanging in there. It is and was and offered up some (not great) pleasure and another nice trip down memory lane w/ Kent.
