WTN: 2012 Caymus 40th Anniversary Edition Cabernet

by Jenise » Sat May 23, 2015 12:15 pm

Believe it or not, for all my belly-aching just days ago, the topic of this wine came up at a small dinner party I threw last night and I wasn't even the one who mentioned it. Raves from two of my eight guests, and debate about Galloni (85 pts) vs. Parker's 96 point take on it. 96 all the way they agreed.

Dammit, I thought, this has gone on long enough. I went and got a bottle.

Nose of marshmallow and vanilla bean. I detest marshmallows and vanilla beans. On the palate, root beer float. I love root beer floats. But it's just plain weird for a wine to taste like one. I can see where for a particular palate that embraces rather than objects to all that new world candy finds this a perfectly crafted wine--everything else is in balance, and it's deeply concentrated, but I am not that person.

And we tasted this after a perfectly gorgeous 06 El Nido, 05 Tranche Slice de Pape, and 05 Den Hoed.

One down, eight to go!

A divisive wine for sure. It's about as polarizing as politics these days.

Give the remaining eight bottles to the ones who thought the 96-pt. score was justified. Problem solved!

David, it would be! Thing is, both of the Caymus 40th lovers at the table can buy me ten times over (one brought me an 07 Kapscandy as a hostess gift for @#$#%'s sakes!!!), so the 'gift' would be a near insult. Better to save for future house parties when other guests who will be over the moon for this style are present.

Makes sense. There are always people who enjoy that style of wine. If they like it, that's great!
