Overheard yesterday in a wine store

by Jenise » Sat May 09, 2015 3:03 pm

To a customer who was looking for reccomendations on lighter red wines:

"Try this pinot noir! I guarantee you'll love it. It's really special, because unlike other wines the grapes have to freeze before they pick them."

I realize she's confusing eiswein, but I can't imagine how/why. Where to people get this stuff? JEESH.

She probably had Pinot Noir and Eiswein once in the same night and had too much of each.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Why can’t you produce an “ice wine” from red grapes? (The "lighter" part is confusing, why would anyone think an "ice wine" is "light"?)

You can, and they do it all the time in BC. BUT, the pinot noir she was handing the guy was a standard issue wine, not an eiswein.

I have had ice wine (and Eiswein) from Pinot Noir/Spatburgunder, Cabernet Franc and Dornfelder. None of them held a candle to white grape ice wine/ Eiswein, even made from humble white grapes such as Vidal Blanc or Ortega.

Ontario wineries make ice wine from red grapes too (but the vast majority are reisling or vidal). Most are rather boring, but the occasional cabernet franc icewine can really be something.
