Death of a icon

by wnissen » Fri May 08, 2015 1:52 pm

No, not a person, thankfully. I'm referring to my Screwpull Leverpull, which I used to open everything, including synthetic corks even though the manual said not to. It was an absolute workhorse, a pleasure to use, and almost but not entirely idiot-proof. The latter was demonstrated in spectacular fashion by my wife's boss, who didn't realize that the mechanism would also push the cork back into the bottle leaving red wine marks so high on the wall I had to get a ladder to clean them.

A wedding present, it came with a sticker advertising, "Extra-long durable screw", and that was extremely accurate. According to Cellartracker it opened at least 1400 bottles, but the real number is higher than that since I only started tracking in 2004. The coating on the worm never gave out, it was the metal frame that cleanly shattered. Sadly, Le Creuset appears to have bought the brand and the new model is not the same. I didn't realize I should have been stockpiling. For the past few days I've been using an ah so, to see what it was like in the old days.

Leverpull is survived by his bastard child, the Metrokane Rabbit. In lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to the Mutual Defense Against Screwcaps Committee.

I send my condolences on the Levelpul, but cannot support your donation request, as it is against my tin-lined religion.

I'm sorry you lost it after all those years. I don't use mine on artificial corks anymore; I lost my last one for doing it. Now I open all artificial corks with a corkscrew.

Tom, I am sick to my stomach. I already threw it out. I had no idea it came with a lifetime guarantee.

Have you checked ebay for a 'vintage' replacement?

Jenise, great idea. No dice on eBay, but Amazon had some. Here's hoping. Thanks.
