WTN: Three Old Qupes...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu May 07, 2015 3:03 pm

Tried these three over the last week:
1. Qupe Marsanne LosOlivosVnyd/SBC (12.5%) 1991: Deep golden/burnished bronze color w/ some browning; strong nutty/toasted hazelnuts/bit oxidized smokey/pencilly some honeyed complex nose; some tart/austere tobaccoy/pencilly/smokey nutty/toasted hazelnuts/honeyed/some oxidized complex flavor; very long nutty/toasted hazelnuts/honeyed/earthy smokey/pencilly/tobaccoy bit oxidized complex finish; definitely oxidized but in a pleasant way and not bitter or metallic like a too old white; quite an interesting old Marsanne. $13.50 (K)
__________
2. Qupe LosOlivosCuvee SBC (67% Syrah/33% Mourv; TW) 1988: Med.light color w/ some bricking; classic oldQupe smokey/smoked meats/Rhonish/Fr.roast coffee slight licorice/blackberry/Syrah bit earthy/roasting chiles/pungent quite complex nose; soft slightly tangy/metallic very roasted/smoked meats/espresso/Rhonish pencilly/cedary/oldQupe slight blackberry/Syrah complex flavor w/ light/drying tannins; very long smokey/pencilly/tobaccoy/oldQupe rather Rhonish/espresso/smoked meats bit tangy/metallic finish w/ light drying/astringent tannins; a beautiful oldQupe nose but starting to dry out on the palate; still offers up some pleasure. $15.49 (KK)
__________
3. Qupe Syrah BienNacidoVnyd/SBC (TW) 1988: Med.dark color w/ little bricking; beautiful classic oldQupe/very smokey/smoked meats/espresso/Rhonish/green olive some blueberry/Syrah mushroomy/truffly/earthy very complex nose; bit tart light tangy/metallic intense Rhonish/smoked meats/green olive/espresso some blueberry/Syrah/blackberry light earthy/pencilly/cedary bit smokey/oak complex flavor w/ light smooth/integrated tannins; very long/lingering smokey/espresso/roasted/Rhonish/green olive some blueberry/Syrah classic smokey/pencilly/old Qupe finish w/ light smooth/gentle tannins; a beautiful old Qupe Syrah w/ loads of roasted/smokey character and settling into the twilight of its yrs w/ no signs of oxidation. $28.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. The Syrah was ullaged down onto the mid-shoulder and there was a lot of crud under the capsule. The cork started to push in under the AhSo but eventually came out. Thought sure the wine was a goner. 'Twas not...in wonderful shape like the Qupe Syrahs often show.

Nice work. I'm always jealous of the Qupe notes you post, because I have enjoyed most of the wines I've had from them. But never followed them in close detail or sought out older vintages. Sounds great.

And when I lived in CA, the basic Qupe Central Coast syrah was a common pick off of wine lists. Reliable, dependable, affordable, and easy to drink from the moment of opening.

Yup......I've followed Qupe from the very start and have always been impressed by what they evolve into. They are not very big & flashy as some Calif Rhones, but always develop into something interesting. Something that Parker/Dunnuck have no clue to.
