Martin Müllen - any views?

by Tim York » Mon May 04, 2015 3:42 am

I ask because a website from which I recently bought an assorted 9 non-French wines, which have turned out all good for my palate, are featuring Martin Müllen as their wine-grower of the month along with mouth-watering descriptions of the wines and testimonials from, FWIW, Wine Advocate, Gault Millau, etc.

Searching here brings up very little but I did see favourable comment from Lars Carlberg on another site.

I must confess to being a bit put off by the Kröv appellation but that is just snobbery.

I have heard nothing but good things, but sadly I have zero availability to actually taste the wines.

I would not worry about the vineyard locations. There is good slate in the sites around Krov. Daniel Vollenweider also makes wines from there.

I've had a few good wines over the years, although I don't have extensive exposure or a strongly-held view of the producer.

But since much depends on availability and other options, if you have limited access to other favorite producers that you already like, I would think Mullen is certainly worth exploring a bit.

Thanks for the useful comments.

Doing some trawling for Martin Müllen in the last number of Mosel Fine Wines, I see good reviews for both trocken and traditional prädikat wines from 2005 and 1995. It sounds as if they are wines for the long haul.

Meanwhile the website's offers for a 2011 Spätlese trocken from Kröv as well as a mixed case have sold out, so the issue is for the moment academic. It looks as if the users of that website knew something that I didn't  .

The weingut's own website is offering some vintages back to 2007.
