Werlitsch Orange Wine 2011

I must confess that when in Austria I rarely venture outside the Wachau, but boy am I glad I tried this from Südsteiermark!
A mix of 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Chardonnay has been kept two years in cask after pressing on the lees. The colour is deep golden, hence the suffix. The nose is very ripe and intense with notes of maracuja, williams pear and overripe mango.
You find lots of intense, exotic fruits and spices on the palate, too, but tannins from the skins keep it in perfect balance. Minerality and salty tones make the wine very interesting and exciting. A very intellectual and new territory wine that you should serve your open-minded wine loving friends. What will happen with this in the cellar I do not know, but I sure will love to find out and thus bought the maximum allocation, which is very rare for me.

Interesting Note...

Interesting note, Fredrik. When I was visiting w/ HeidiSchrock in SantaFe a few months ago, she indicated
there were a few folks experimenting w/ skin-contact whites, but she didn't know who they were nor had
tried any of them.
How much was the cost per btl??

23 Euro per bottle. Money very well spent! :)

So many interesting wines coming out of Austria. Our grip here just did Austria last Tuesday night. Didn't have anything quite like this, but there were some cool surprises.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
