Decanter: Jefford on Rossese

by TomHill » Tue Apr 28, 2015 11:12 am

Quite an interesting article by AndrewJefford in Decanter on Rossese from Liguria:
Decanter:Rossese

Somehow. though, he's probably flailing at windmills if he thinks the Burg lovers are going to migrate to Ligurian Rossese, a wine that's even rarer than GC RedBurg.
You seldom see these wines around. I've only had two (both at Pizzeria Diavola) and was pretty impressed by them. Very perfumed reds with soaring aromatics, not too unlike a good DryCreekVlly Zin, but w/o the heft or alcohol.

Bravo for Jefford, who is not afraid of going off the beaten track. Believe it or not, I have spent a holiday in an apartment in the fascinating old fortified town of Dolceacqua http://www.dolceacqua.it/ . However, it is a long time ago, '78 or '79, and I am no longer capable of writing a TN of Rossese which we naturally drank copiously. I do recall a wine which was lighter than the Italian red norm which attractive soft fruit and good acidity but, based on what it was then, I think it is a stretch to compare it to village Burgundy.

Thanks to Jefford, and to Tom for posting, I will look for a Rossese to include next time I do an Italian order.

I've had some in Liguria and was much impressed, but have never pulled a cork in the US. I'd probably call Chambers Street or possibly Kermit if I were looking for some, but so much wine, so little time ...

i had one a very long time ago in santa margherita and loved it. i'll be on the riviera in a few weeks and plan to take the train to ventimiglia and look for a wine shop and hopefully score one or two.
