WTN: Two Rieslings...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Apr 12, 2015 4:39 pm

Tried these two Rieslings fresh off the boat from CortiBros:
1. VerusVnyds Riesling Dry ZGP Kakovostno/Stajerska/Slovenia (13%; www.VerusVino.com) 2011: Cloud of smoke released when cap unscrewed w/ a pop; obviously "refreshed" w/ CO@; Med.gold color; very strong gout de petrol/Mosel valve oil some lime/lemon/R/floral rather minerally/pungent lovely nose; quite tart/CO2-infected juicy/lime/lemon/R/floral light stony/mineral/chalky/Sprite soda pop/ginger ale/mineral water flavor; med.short very tart/tangy/CO2/brisk lime/lemon/R/juicy finish; a really lovely R/petrol nose like a ClareVlly R but rather vapid on the palate & tarted up by the CO2...you can put lipstick on a handsome pig but you still don't want to kiss him. $20.00 (CB)

2. Ravines Dry Riesling FingerLakes (12.5%; www.RavinesWine.com) Geneva/NY 2013: Pale gold color w/ very tiny bubbles that dissipate after 4-5 minutes; rather flinty/earthy slight pungent/match stick/sauerkraut rather stony/terroir-driven lighht grapefruity/R nose w/ little R fruit; rather tart/tangy/CO2-refreshed quite steely/metallic/tangy earthy/chalky/stony light grapefruit/lemon/R flavor w/ little R fruit; med.short very tangy/metallic/flinty/steely/savory slight R/grapefruity finish; an interesting terroir-driven R that speaks strongly of FingerLakes but little of recognizable R; I suspect this will be a very interesting R in 10 yrs or so, but have no data to base that on. $18.00 (CB)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Verus: I was quite struck w/ the classic R/petrol beautiful nose on the wine. But it had clearly been "refreshed" by a CO2 addition at bottling. Maybe excessively so. Not much signs of the petrol on the palate.
There's not a lot of thought given to dissolved CO2 in wine. Wine generally comes off of fermentation w/ about 2,000 mg/L of dissolved and it's typically downhill from there. But apparently dissolved CO2 can have a big/unrecognized impact on the sensory character of a wine. Yet, apparently, few wineries pay much attention to that parameter. Interesting discussion on dissolved CO2 here:

Ravines is pretty good overall. I suspect they will be even better as the vines age.
