For gin geeks: Best Gin for a Martini?

Do you need to spend big bucks to make a great version of the drink? Does one style of gin work better than another? Writer Michael Dietsch convened a tasting of martinis made with ten different gins to test out a variety of gin styles and price points.

I like Dietsch's writings, in general, and this experiment in particular.
One might quibble with the choice of vermouth but overall, very well executed.

Julie Reiner just did a piece for Bon Appetit that paired various gins with the vermouth she thought matched best. Can't find it online yet, might be print only, but a very good piece on creating a martini.
