'13 Anthony Road Rose' of Cabernet Franc

by Carl Eppig » Mon Apr 06, 2015 9:23 am

2013 Anthony Road Rose’ of Cabernet Franc (Alcohol level: 13%, $16 U.S.). Deep pink in color, this is one of the darkest Finger Lakes rosés. In the nose, notes of rubber, smoke, and pepper sit atop fresh, vivid, candied cherry/strawberry fruit. It is medium bodied and full in the mouth, with lively tingly acidity. It delivers substantial candied cherry and strawberry fruit flavors, with notes of roses, smoke, earth and pepper. There is a long peppery finish.

We enjoyed it with Easter dinner of glazed ham, sweet potatoes, and green beans almandine.

It sounds like a good wine - how dry was it? I find myself disappointed with the majority of FL rose's: they tend to be flabby/sweet or excessively austere. One would think they could do a better job, especially in the 'lighter' red years which are bound to occur now and then in that climate (like 2013). I've liked some of Dr. Frank's or Ravines pinot noir roses in recent years.

It was almost bone dry.

Joe:

A mini revolution in dry rose is taking place. I went to a press and retailer tasting of the region's dry rose a few weeks ago. Most were quite a leap from just a few years ago. I think there will be a June dry rose festival for consumers, including some 30 wineries. Worth a try.

Thomas,

Which wines stood out for you? I'll be up in the FL sometime when the weather gets warmer and will be on the lookout for some good bottles.

Joe:

Have you inside knowledge as to when it will get warm? And when it will stop raining/snowing?

Ravines 2014 Pinot Noir rose and Dr. Franks 100% Pinot Meunier pink sparkler.

Anthony Road's 2014 Cabernet Frank rose is quite pleasing. Lafayette Reneau's 2014 Pinot Noir rose also pleasing. Damiani's 2014 Pinot Noir rose is well structured. Anyela's from Skaneateles Lake Pinot Noir rose has depth.

Pretty much my reaction too. Friends had been raving about roses, so when a local wine shop featured FL roses last year I tried a few. I was not impressed and thought roses might just not be for me. But Thomas has rejuvenated my hopes so I shall try try again.
