I've never really met a Musar that I would actively dislike. And even the ones I thought were initially a bit weak have always turned out ok with enough age (like the red '90 and '96). But usually I know from the very first sniff if it's a Musar I particularly like or whether it is a relatively weak one. But I must say I am confused by this '07.
The scent of this particular bottle is rather unvolatile and unfunky and seems to have plenty of dried fruit character as if the August heat wave during the vintage had raisined the grapes.
The palate, however, is nicely structured and really rather fresh on the finish. It's actually very moreish if you like some proper tannin and fair bit of acidity in addition to the sunny fruit. It's almost as if the year of weather extremes made the nose emphasize the hot year aspects and the palate the cool year ones.
Never before have I seen such a different style on the scent and palate of a Musar. But young Musar seems to develop and change rapidly so I wonder how different my views will be in six months!
TL;DR: not as relatively weak as the '90 or '96 and not as gorgeous as the '99, not the most Musary Musar but perfectly decent. And I feel fairly confident that it will turn out just fine since all others have, too.
