Coffaro Lagrein '10

White pepper, sour cherries, more red than Zin black. Powerful stuff. Mountain Charlie might have liked it. http://www.santacruzpl.org/history/articles/239/ I liked it with a leftovers dish of London broil steak sliced up and mixed with shiitake mushrooms and red onions, and an artichoke.

From my notes: 14.9% alcohol 88% Lagrein 12% Aglianico 100 cases
It's all estate. Dave has half a row of practically everything. :-)

So Zinfandel level alcohol in Lagrein?

OK.

I know many on this board like his wines, but wow they pack a kick.

Interesting and unusual grape, isn't it. Have had s superb Italian lagrein by Terlano, but all other examples were odd in different ways. So much so thZt I have no sense of the grapes actual character.

My experience of Lagrein as a primary component is limited to Coffaro, and of course Dave is different.
This wine was more interesting than delicious, but went well with strong, sausagey, spicy food. A lot of tannin and acidity made it rather difficult by itself.

John, think it would. Haves aged into something more elegant? The Terlano I mentioned aged like a good claret.

I'm not sure, Jenise. And I'm a fan of Petit Sirah. I'd be more hopeful had there been some more fruit between the acid and tannin.

Stopped In...

by TomHill » Wed Apr 08, 2015 11:26 am

Stopped in there Tues of last week and picked up a btl of his Lagrein and his Aliganico as well.
Look forward to tryying them.
Thanks for the head's up, John.
Also found out when I stopped by Unti that they've blended their two vintages of LaCrima di Morra d'Alba, bttld
it recently, and will release it this Fall. That's pretty exciting, I think. Orgasamic, in fact.

Another Lagrein '10

by Carl Eppig » Wed Apr 08, 2015 6:27 pm

2010 Tobin James, Silver Reserve, Paso Robles, Lagrein. This is a pitch black wine with a ton of ripe fruit fore and aft. Alcohol level is 14.2%. Matched it lamb shank stew in pasta and salad. Yum!
