Ridge Trivia

by TomHill » Mon Mar 16, 2015 7:57 pm

1. Just got my Z-list shipment, which we'll taste come Wed. I noticed that wines all had the tiny laser-etched #'s on the side of the btl, low-down, to indicate date & time of bottling. You have to peer at the btl really closely and hold it to the light just right. Jeez...don't those folks at Ridge understand that those of us who have followed Ridge from the very start don't know how to deal w/ change like this??

2. Ridge always puts the bottling date on the side label. Have for yrs. But they never use the same format. Like this time, one was "bttld Feb 2015", one was "bttld 12/14, one was "bttld December 2014". Sometimes it's "bttld Dec '13". For the life of me, I've yet to figure out the rhyme or reason or the algorithm they use for the different formats. It's not a function of which wnry, it's not a function of which winemaker writes the label, it just seems to be random as best I can tell. I wish they would decide on one/single format for that bottling date. That'd be anuther change, then, that'd stress me out!!

I think, Tom, whoever writes the label text actually writes it, rather than copy-and-paste on a computer. And of course the printer simply sets up what's on the sheet in front of him.
Or it may be that the label artist does whatever "looks right." Yeah, I'll go for that one!

I also just noted that the latest Novy & Bedrocks that I got also have laser-etched bottling numbers on the bottles. But the codes are not very decipherable.

Are you sure those are bottling codes, and not just etched bottle lot numbers from the manufacturer (which have been around for a while)?

David,
I don't think the come from the manufacturer like that. I know in the case of Ojai, that is etched on the btlg line.
On the Ridge EastBench btl, it showed "EB13", which I assume means EastBench 2013.
