WTN: Four Gruners...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Mar 15, 2015 11:08 am

Susan has a friend from Vienna visiting for a few weeks, so thought I'd serve up some Gruners:
1. Weingut Schwarzbock GV Weinland (12.5%; EB; www.Schwarzboeck.At) Hagenbrunn 2013: Pale yellow color; lightly floral/GV/peppery rather low-key/quiet innocuous nose; fairlt tart/lean/metallic/tinny very light floral/GV/peppery austere rather vapid/watery flavor; med.short dry/austere/tart/metallic/tangy very light floral/GV/peppery finish; speaks very quietly of GV; a rather dull/vapid/thin GV and overpriced at $12.78/l (PrimaIlC)

2. Tatomer Meeresboden GV SBC (420 cs; 13.5%) Lompoc 2013: Med.light gold color; rather fragrant/perfumed/spicy/floral/GV/peppery/fennel bit melony/mango/ripe quite attractive nose; rather tart somewhat rich/lush very spicy/floral/GV/mango/melony/ripe light chalky/mineral slight steely/metallic flavor; long tart/bright spicy/GV/peppery/melony/ripe/floral slight chalky/mineral finish; a rather interesting and quite attractive GV. $28.00

3. Alzinger GV Loibner Frauenweingarten Federspiel (12.5%; www.Alzinger.At) Wachau 2012: Pale yellow color; some mineral/stony/earthy/metallic quite spicy/peppery/GV/floral slight valve oil/pingent/petrol smokey/complex nose; quite tart/tangy/metallic/grapefruity/leaner spicy/peppery/GV/floral strong stony/mineral flavor; long mineral/stony/tangy/bit lean strong spicy/peppery/GV finish; much more lean/mineral/stony and a bit more peppery than the Carlisle; quite a nice GV at a fair price. $28.00 (AV)

4. Carlisle GV SteinerVnyd/SonomaMtn/SonomaCnty (14.1%; 220 cs) Windsor 2013: Med.gold color; powerfully fragrant/perfumed/floral/GV/some peppery rather spicy/waxy slight stony/mineral very aromatic nose; fairly tart/tangy rich/lush light stony/earthy/mineral/steely very perfumed/GV/floral/very spicy/ripe melon/mango some waxy/figgy powerful yet balanced flavor; very long/lingering tart/tangy/rich/lush powerfully aromatic/floral/GV/peppery; a powerful/rich Calif GV but enough mineral/stony character to keep one's interest; maybe the best Carlisle GV yet; terrific aromatics. $32.50

And a wee BloodyPulpit:
1. The first two GV's we had Fri night. The Tatomer is quite a lovely Calif expression of GV, the Schwartzboeck was lean & thin. Calif/1, Austria/0. Wolfgang concurs.
The last two GV's we had together Sat night. I found the Alzinger a bit more interesting, but I was dazzled by the powerful aromatics of the Carlisle and it had enough stony/mineral character to keep my interest and the lively balance to go thru the btl. It reminded me more of a smaragd level Wachau GV. Calif/1, Austria/1; a tie. Wolfgang much preferred the Carlisle.
JancisRobinson recently declared the Carlisle GV as the best from the NewWorld yet. She may have got it right for once.

I have had the Carlisle Grüner Veltliner once, and liked it very much, but since I am not on the mailing list I am unlikely to ever drink it again.
