WTN: MoonlightHill GWT FlintHills '10...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Mar 11, 2015 11:12 am

Looking for a throwaway white last night, I cracked:
1.MoonlightHill Vnyd&Wnry AtomicWeiner GWT FlintHills (Est: 2009; EB) Riley/KS 2010: Med.dark gold color; rather earthy/dusky some musky/hybridy/plastic very slight floral/GWT/lychee almost muscatty/spicy rather interesting terroir-driven nose; quite dry very tart/lean stony/earthy/mineral some musky/hybridy/plastic metallic/tinny very slight floral/lychee/GWT flavor; med.long some plastic/musky/hybridy earthy/metallic/tangy/grapefruity slight floral/lychee; very liittle GWT varietal character; a very terroir-driven white that resembles a bit of a Jura Savignan; a classic expression of the FlintHills terroir that they'd kill to have in the Cote de Beaune. $nc (KS)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. The back label reads:"The melodic thunder of explosive ordnance from nearby FtRiley adds excitement to the otherwise rural atmosphere, and vibrations from ground-shaking projectiles gently stimulate deep root growth thereby ameliorating the establishment of a vigorous and healthy vnyd. Along with tornado-aerated soil, the exquisite aroma suggestive of bovine ordure and charred prairie poaceae wafting from nearby ranches uniquely enhances the complex wine bouquet and brings delight to the discerning palate". Obviously written by the same guy who does the Kendall-Jackson back labels.

2. This was a ho-made wine given to me by my major professor at K-State. It was made by DougMcGregor, a fellow professor in the Mechanical & Nuclear Engineering Dept at KSU. Doug owns a small vnyd to the west of campus, not far from the FtRiley firing range. I was expecting the wine to be crap. It was not. Though lacking in the GWT varietal perfume and showing a bit of the plastic character I associate w/ hybrids (maybe crushed/fermented in a plastic trash bin?), it was a pretty creditable white, not to unlike some of the terroir-driven rustic whites from the Jura or Macedonia. Actually, rather interesting & a pleasure to drink.
