Weiner Gemischter Satz???

by TomHill » Wed Mar 04, 2015 1:45 pm

Anyone ever tried one of these from on the outskirts of Vienna?? Made from a mish/mash of varieties, often from very old vines.

Interesting Vinography blog entry:
GimischterSatzBlog

I'd heard of this wine, but have never seen one in real life. Apparently, TerryTheise doesn't have one, which is probably why. I'm intrigued now.

MattRorick/Forlorn-Hope has made a GemischterSatz from grapes off MokulumneGlennVnyd in Lodi. Made from: Albalonga, Arnsberger, Bacchus, Ehrenfelser, Faber, Forta, Freuhburgunder, Gewürztraminer, Grüner Veltliner, Gudetal, Huxelrebe, Kanzler, Mario Muscat, Müller-Thurgau, Noblessa, Optima, Oraniensteiner, Perle, Riesling A49, Riesling GM 110, Riesling GM 198, Riesling GM 239, Roter Veltliner, Scheurebe, Siegerrebe, Sirius, Silvaner, Traminer, Weissburgunder, and Wurzer. Wow....what's all that stuff doing in Lodi??

Not yet tried Matt's rendition of this, though.

funny you should mention this. never heard of it but recently found a real one listed for the flagship vintages stores of ontario's LCBO. the LCBO nearest me isn't a flagship store but the really fine manager there is trying to get me a bottle. hope he succeeds. apparently it is imported into the US - i believe by winebow.

You need to get out more.

Sure and of course I have had it.

It's a standard wine on the list of Gruner restaurant here in Portland. Damn good too, and great with their pan-germanic alpine style food. Schnitzel und spaetzle. Sausage plate mit der sauerkraut. Smoked fish. Yowza.

And Tom? The first rule of Gemischter Satz is you don't talk about the grapes in Gemischter Satz. No kidding. The Wien Gemischter Satz is not supposed to reveal what their 'field blend' is. And it is all co-fermented; whatever grapes you pull at harvest, from however many varieties you have growing in whatever mix---that's what you get with the wine.

Hi,

on our last visit to Vienna we had a

Nußberg Alte Reben Gemischter Satz from Wieninger (2011?)

in a local restaurant (about 30€) with Austrian food (gebackenes Rindfleisch, "fried beef") and were quite impressed.

Yup...no doubt, Hoke...I do need to get out more.

Thanks for the info. I was sure somebody around here would be able to answer this obscure/esoteric question.
