A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. In my stack of orphan wines in my garage w/ no temperature controls, I came upon this box of Alsatian/Calif whites.I was certain the entire box was dead.
This was the first one I opened. The capsule was badly corroded but there was little ullage. As I gently started the Ah-So into the neck, the cork immediately plopped down into the wine. Another bad sign. When I poured the first glass, the slightly golden/bronze color gave me hope. There first whiff of the nose indicated that I had more than just a survivor here. The wine was amazingly good & I finished off the btl as I cooked away w/ great relish. Save for a bit of butterscotch in the wine, one would be hard pressed to find any oxidation in this. So what gives?? This wine should have been totally shot. Have 3 more btls left, so wish me luck.
This wine, because of the noticible RS, was obviously made in the Z-H style. In modern times, it would have been labeled VendangeTardive and the price doubled. Not sure if the RS was the reason it survived or not. But I sure lucked out on this one.
