WTN: Two In The Winter of their Years...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Mar 02, 2015 12:11 pm

Tried these two from the abandoned stash found in my garage:
1. WintersWnry PetiteSirah Calif NaismithVnyd/Madison (12.1%; Aida Naismith Centennial Reserve; Planted in 1907; SaH: 23 Brix; TA: 0.71%) Winemaker: D.R.Storm 1985: Med.dark color w/ somewhat brown/murky color; strong earthy/dusty/loamy some oxidized nose w/ no fruit remaining; slightly tart very earthy/loamy/dusty somewhat tired/dried out/very sour some oxidized flavor w/ light/coarse/astringent tannins; med.long tart very loamy/earthy/dusty/peppery finish w/ some coarse/rough/dried out tannins; has some intellectual interest but not much life left here.

2. Winterbrook Wnry&Vnyd Zin Reserve AmadorCnty (14.5%) BuenaVistaRd/Ione/CA; Geoffrey Fisher/Winemaker1985: Pale rose/brown/fino sherry color; rather oxidized/sherry/maderized earthy bit old Mission-like rather interesting nose; bit tart rather oxidized/maderized slight cranberry/Zin rather bitter/dried out austere/dried out flavor w/ some bitter/astringent tannins; long very sour/dry/austere somewhat metallic/bitter bit cranberry/Zin finish w/ dried-out/astringent/bitter tannins; totally shot as a Zin but not too bad for an Amatillado sherry. $9.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Naismith: This is the name of legends. Basketball was invented by Dr.James Naismith at Univ of Kansas, just 30 miles from my home. In order to keep his football players active during the cold/Winter months; Dr.Naismith mounted peach baskets on the balcony at each end of the KU gymnasium and developed the early rules of the game. Each time a basket was scored, the referee had to climb up a nearby ladder and retrieve the soccer ball from the peach basket. He soon realized the game would go much faster if he cut the bottom out of the peach baskets. KU folks are slow learners. K-State folks are sharp as whips.
Aida Cadenasso married her husband, Welland Naismith. She died in 1987 at 102 yrs of age. I cannot find out if he was related to JamesNaismith or not. The wnry has long gone kaput. I can't determine if this old PS vnyd still exists in Madison or not. There appears to be a lot of vnyds near this tiny burg NW of Sacramento. I was struck by the very high acidity of the grapes at 23 Brix. Anyway...an interesting bit of history.

2. Winterbrook: Another wnry that's gone kaput. Located down on the flats of western AmadorCnty. I was quite struck by the pale color of it when poured. Totally shot but better than the Manzanilla sherry that I had alongside it.

Sure don't hear much mention of the Mission grape! Your story reminds me of my first taste of Misssion. Was rolling about that area, and stopping at some small winery we passed on a country road. It was probably a Thursday. Adorable little Betty White of a woman was pouring, and the wines were quite oxidized which I pointed out. Taking absolutely no offense at that, she poured on the hospitality. "Are you staying in the area? Cuz if you are, come back tomorrow! We open a new bottle every Friday!"
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Hmmm, Jenise....sounds a lot like DeaverVnyd there on SteinerRd just East of Renwood. Their wines are
pretty oxidized & they'd have Mission. She (MaryDeaver) runs the B&B there, right next to a lovely pond.
