St Innocent Seven Springs Pinot Noir 1994
For those of you who happen to be lucky enough to have some of this left in your cellar:
Still quite dark, deep garnet with little thinning of color. Lovely spicy nose of cedar, spices, leather and a bit of fruit. On the palate, luxurious spicy secondary flavours with a hint of fruit. Nice length.
Reminds me mostly of some very old and exceptional Burgundies tasted in Burgundy on several occasions. Blind, I would have thought a Grand Cru of about 25-30 years and a good vintage. My first thought was a Richebourg 1959 that I once had.
Still some life left but no reason to wait.
Exceptional
It is perhaps worth noting that this is materially darker than any old Burgundy other than a Grand Cru and it has a lovely spicy quality wrapped around a slightly acidic, corps of residual tannins so there is flavour and a bit of pucker on the palate. The more you concentrate, the more impressive the wine.
An object lesson in the idea that great wines from anywhere can age spectacularly.
