Short month ending soon! What next for Wine Focus?

Give us another good, conversation-provoking idea involving a wine that people around the world can find and afford, and that is also of general interest. Not too tough an order, eh?

Pinot Gris/Grigio
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Okay, I'm going to come right out and say it: For every Pinot Gris/Grigio that is not boring, how many are?

I don't think I've had a single bottle of Pinot Gris/Grigio in my cellar for several years. I can't recall an Italian example which was other than boring. Alsatian renditions can be remarkable but tend to be too rich to be useful for most food pairings. The most food friendly and interesting I have had was indeed a Grauburgunder from Keller, 1998 I think, dry and fresh but round with hints of quasi-Alsatian opulence.

There is wine producer about 20km away who makes a Pinot Gris http://www.arpents-du-soleil.com/fr/index.php . This is really cider and Calvados country and local wine is a curiosity but last time when I tried some of their range they were quite good. If Pinot Gris is chosen for a WF, I'll take another look and additionally try to find an Alsatian which is like Keller's.

Okay, here's a compromise! Let's go with Howie's idea of Pinot Gris/Grigio, but with a twist to try to keep us focused on the more interesting terroirs: Pinot Gris/gio from places with a vowel on the front of the name: Alto Adige, Alsace, Oregon and (cheating just a little) Colli Orientali and Environs.

Ontario and its environs, even across the International border, will work too, Howie. 8)

I take that as a green light to purchase and post on Arpents du Soleil from Ormandy and on PG from Uxembourg and Einhessen  , if I get over that way, which is unlikely.

As always, Tim, we have no walls, only light curtains marking the boundaries here. 8)
