Going to Sonoma wine country

by Tom V » Sun Feb 22, 2015 12:58 pm

Hi, We'll be going to San Francisco and then staying in Windsor for a week. Just wondered if any WLP folks with knowledge of the areas might know of any interesting or under the radar restaurants in the Frisco or Sonoma area. Thanks For Any Input!

Bunches of well-known restaurants in Healdsburg. There's an excellent Italian restaurant, Catelli's, in Geyserville - that's about 20 minutes from Windsor. Chef Patrick's in Guerneville does "California French" cuisine, really excellent. I walk down to Bistro 29 on 5th St in downtown Santa Rosa once every month or 6 weeks. All those places are fairly close to Windsor.

Neither of these is under the radar but I have enjoyed great dinners at Charlie Palmer's Dry Creek Kitchen in Healdsburg and the Farmhouse Inn in Forestville. Dry Creek Kitchen has had a policy of not charging a corkage fee if you bring in a bottle of Sonoma County wine. (Best to check beforehand if that is still their policy if you want to bring your own bottle.)

Thank You John for those suggestions which I will put in the hopper.

JC, appreciate the suggestions, I had read about the Farmhouse in the Steve Heimoff book "A Journey Along The Russian River" which I am reading in anticipation of our trip and have almost completed. The farmhouse was mentioned & seemed well regarded besides which it caught my attention because of it's history. Thanks

A couple of others - Spinster Sisters in Santa Rosa has excellent small plates. The Pullman Kitchen near Railroad Square in Santa Rosa has very good food and a good atmosphere, and the style is kind of hard to describe. You might call in very high-class home cooking, I guess.
Glen Ellen Star is a place I visit several times a year. I haven't been to Zazu since they moved to Sebastopol, but its menus are interesting.

Hey John, Thanks for these additional suggestions. I always like to get a heads up from local folks on interesting food options when I travel. These places sound interesting, appreciate it. Tom
