Mazzocco Warm Springs Vineyard (Dry Creek Valley) Zinfandel '10
Sort of tastes like generic red wine. Dark color, sweetish entry, nobody home.
All the bad things. And their winery is just over the hill from Ridge.
It's a Wilson wine. <sigh>

Back in the day, ie before the acquisition by Wilson, I thought Mazzocco's zins quite nice..Phyllis Zouzounis was the winemaker at the time..Since the Wilson acquisition and a change in winemaker and an apparent change in winemaking philosophy, we have visited the tasting room just up the hill from Ridge on 2 occasions..Both times, the only zin I found drinkable was their generic zin.(ie, not a single vineyard zin). The single vineyard zins tasted muddled, no sense of zin and much too high in alcohol for my taste..Too many other options available in Sonoma for me go back to Mazzocco.

So who's come you two guys' profile picture looks exactly like the TomHill profile picture??
I thought it was enough to have just one "ugly" around here!!

Back under Phyllis reign, the Mazzocco Zins were pretty good I thought. But when I stopped in there a yr ago,
I was pretty underwhelmed by the wines. And the Zins, being vnyd-designates, are not cheap.

Tom: Speaking for myself, tho I suspect John T are both of an age, I am a dinosaur, have been drinking this stuff for > 50 yrs and who wants to see a picture of T Rex??
I note that that your impressions and mine of the wines made by Phyllis and the current iterations are on the same page..Not too surprising since I frequently align my palate to yours and have asked for your assessments before pulling the trigger on several of my Bedrock allocations
Can't say I go back with Tom Hill since the very beginning but I have followed and appreciated your tasting notes and comments for quite some time...I go back to the days of Stu Yaniger re Robin's Board ,

I think I'm a taste older than the guy who has no spacebar on his computer. I passed the 3/4 pole last month. I dunno about you, Jon.
I had dropped in to Mazzocco one day just to see what they had. I was disappointed to note that it was a Wilson store, but as I often do, I bought a bottle just to be nice and get something. What the heck. Well, I'd probably have been better off forking over the tasting fee. One lives, and (however rarely) learns.

Am not a fan of the Wilson wines, either.

I remember enjoying a Mazzoco Bordeaux Blend (Matrix, I believe) from pre-Wilson era (1999) that was fatastic in its savory character.

Now, I just use those awful Wilson "Gold Medal" banners as a signal to "avoid" the winery. It seems like they are popping up EVERYWHERE

I think she makes all of the wines so even if you are getting different wineries, it is the same old supermarket quality fruit bomb wine.

Matrix is another Wilson brand - the place is on Westside Road.

I thought that the Wilson's made it a separate brand, but that there originally was a Mazzoco Matrix Bordeaux Blend.

Maybe I'm wrong!

Or maybe you know more than I do. They had the Matrix brand and winery shortly before (or maybe shortly after) they bought DeLorimier. But I wasn't familiar with Mazzocco at that time.
